Outlook and IMAP: Keep a Copy of Sent Messages on the Server

Posted on September 7, 2009 at 9:18 PM in General

I have used POP ever since I got my first email account all of those years ago. It always served me well. Besides, I have always been somewhat of an email packrat and by utilizing POP I have been able to save essentially every email I ever received or sent dating back well over ten years.

Gee, maybe one day I will actually need to find something in one of these ancient emails.

Well, last week I got hooked on the Gateway Drug To All Things Apple, otherwise know as the iPhone. You see, prior to last week I had never even touched one. I refused to because of the exclusive agreement between Apple and AT&T. You know, the one that was signed seemingly the next day after I switched away from AT&T service (after being with them for many years). Anyways, I feared that if I stopped and played with an iPhone I would be hooked and could not settle for anything else.

Try Thunderbird, you can set up where you want your sent emails to be stored as well as that you can link your trash or spam folder to use the same folders on your imap server etc

@ Mark - I meant to include a comment about Thunderbird in my post, because I knew someone would bring it up.

@ All - While Thunderbird clearly handles IMAP processing better than Outlook does - out of the box, Thunderbird is not now, never has been, and likely never will be anything in comparison to Outlook. Outlook has a much nicer interface, has infinitely more features (overall), and other than the IMAP configuration comparison, is an infinitely better piece of software.

Besides, as I stated in my post, I want my calendar, contacts, and email all in one place. To my knowledge, Thunderbird only handles email and an address book. And it is barely "ok" at either one of those. Thunderbird may be fine for some people, but it is not for me.

By the way, I forgot to mention: this post is *not* about me seeking recommendations for an email client. Instead it is meant solely for the purpose of helping another Outlook user in the future.

Imap is great on my WinMo Omnia also... used it for more than years on different WinMo touch phones.. welcome aboard! Imap rocks.

FYI: You can also use SyncKolab extension on Thunderbird to sync everything (contacts/tasks/cal)...http://www.gargan.org/en/Mozilla_Extensions/SyncKo...

Maybe you weren't sending through imap? It should be saved, no?

I was in the exact same situation but I switched to Thunderbird for the first time to use imap with gmail. I'm using the 3 beta.

I find with a few addons it is better than Outlook in most ways. I don't need a calendar to share but I added Lightning for date/todo/events. Clippings is good for inserting snippets more easily than Outlook. Etc.

Couple things are better in Outlook, and still in beta, but I now prefer TB on most points. If not, can likely find an addon to do what I want.
